Fort Austin, set in a serene rural environment surrounded by small farms, offers a range of activities. Within a mile, explore wineries, dining, river access, the town park, dark skies for stargazing, SUP, hiking, hunting, fishing, live music, galleries, and farm-to-table dinners, making it an ideal destination for diverse interests. Additionally, Jumbo Mountain bike trails are popular for trail rides.
The Westmoreland at Fort Austin property was owned by Westmoreland Coal Company. They purchased the property in the mid 1970s with the idea of building a belt line to carry coal from the mine site, 3 miles up Stevens Gulch Road, down to their railroad loadout facility across the highway from Fort Austin. The main lodge on Fort Austin was used as Westmoreland’s local office, executive housing, company parties, events and meetings for many years. It was used by subsequent owners for some type of ritual gatherings, complete with stone amphitheater and bonfire circle. The cherry orchard on Fort Austin was managed by Stahl Orchards until the trees eventually died from neglect. Over the years the property fell into disrepair; it went through bank seizure, foreclosure, and was eventually auctioned off. Tim had the foresight to see a diamond in the rough. The property was in such rough shape, the utilities so damaged, and the structure so in need of repair that it took a year to get electricity, heat and water turned on. Another year was spent repairing the structure to make the house livable.

EXCELLENT Based on 40 reviews Posted on DebOctober 3, 2025Verified Really enjoyed our stay. The front porch was a great place to enjoy an evening drink. We stayed in Williams Place. Note that this rental does not have a stove, oven or full size refrigerator. I did not realize this is a resort type property and mistook photos of the main lodge as photos of the rental. My fault! You can use the lodge kitchen but we chose to make meals using the provided hotplate and grill. We did use the main lodge refrigerator and had no issues. I chose this property because it had a bathtub. I prefer baths over showers. I used the bathtub but it is very stained. Could use a refurbish. There was leak under the bathroom sink which was fixed during our stay using a bucket...surprising, but worked. Heather was very accommodating in providing us with the extra towels/washcloths we needed. It appears they are use to shorter stays than our nine nights. All-in-all, a peaceful stay.Posted on CheyanneSeptember 21, 2025Verified We had such a wonderful stay, we booked William’s place as the other cabins were fully booked. I came with a friend and my dog, and it was the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and it’s within walking distance of some great wineries. Tim was a friendly and welcoming host, which made the experience even better. One highlight was discovering an AMAZING Italian restaurant in Paonia—definitely worth a visit if you stay here! While the suite doesn’t have air conditioning, keeping the windows open at night cooled things down nicely.Overall, I’d absolutely recommend this Airbnb to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.Posted on JohnAugust 13, 2025Verified Tim place was perfect place for our family to spend the nightPosted on JacobJuly 20, 2025Verified Stayed here multiple times and always the same pleasant welcome from Tim, beautiful setting, top-notch hospitality, and overall great experience!Posted on SarahJune 22, 2025Verified We absolutely loved this place! We also really appreciated the dog bed and blanket for our dogs - what a great touch!Posted on ShawnSeptember 1, 2024Verified We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Fort Austin. This was a perfect getaway for both of us and our dog. Tim was very friendly and he even made a fire for all his guests the last night that we were staying there. I can't wait to go back to Fort Austin and relax with the serene views and mountain alpenglow. This is an absolute gem and a perfect place to escape for the week or weekend. Thanks Tim!Posted on BarryAugust 25, 2024Verified Host Tim has created a beautiful farm-style encampment with several cabins and studios to select from and let me tell you it's fabulous!! Can't wait to return....Posted on Micah & MarilynAugust 5, 2024Verified Great location in the heart of the vineyards in Paonia. Rooms were well decorated and comfortable.
